Narrative text adalah jenis text dalam Bahasa Inggris untuk menceritakan suatu cerita yang memiliki rangkaian peristiwa kronologis yang saling terhubung. Tujuan dari teks ini adalah untuk menghibur pembaca tentang suatu kisah atau cerita.

Jenis-jenis Narrative Text

Narrative text bisa berbentuk imajiner atau pun faktual. Berikut adalah contoh genre dari Narrative text:

Ciri-ciri Narrative Text

• Menggunakan Action Verb dalam bentuk Past Tenses.
• Menggunakan Noun tertentu untuk sebagai kata ganti orang.
• Menggunakan Adjective yang membentuk Noun Phrase.
• Menggunakan Conjunction untuk mengurutkan kejadian-kejadian.

Struktur Narrative Text

Struktur dari narrative text berfokus pada serangkaian tahapan yang diusulkan untuk membangun sebuah teks ini sendiri. Secara umum, terdapat empat tahapan dalam Narrative text, yaitu:

Orientation

Orientation atau biasa disebut dengan pendahuluan, berisi tentang siapa, kapan, di mana suatu cerita ditetapkan.

Complication

Complication menceritakan awal masalah yang menyebabkan puncak masalah atau yang biasa disebut dengan klimaks. Bagian ini biasanya melibatkan karakter utama dari cerita tersebut.

Resolution

Bagian ini adalah akhir dari cerita atau berupa solusi dari masalah yang terjadi. Masalah dapat diselesaikan dapat menjadi lebih baik atau malah lebih buruk yang nantinya akan membuat cerita berakhir dengan bahagia atau sebaliknya.

Terkadang, ada beberapa resolusi yang berupa masalah lain untuk dipecahkan. Hal ini sengaja dibuat oleh penulis untuk menambah dan mempertahankan minat dan ketegangan bagi pembacanya. Biasanya, jenis resolusi ini terdapat pada genre mysteries dan horror.

Re-orientation

Bagian adalah penutup dari suatu cerita yang bersifat opsional. Re-orientation bisa berisi tentang pelajaran moral, saran atau pengajaran dari penulis.

Berikut contoh dari Narrative Text 

In 1653 in the Northwitch, there lived a little boy named Peter Lorne Baker. From childhood, he lived together with his father in a wooden house near the forest. His mother died giving birth to him. His father, a scientist, was often busy with his work, so Peter felt lonely. Peter often disturbs his father who is working in a laboratory at his home. Actually, Peter was curious about what he saw in the laboratory. He saw many amazing things such as star binoculars, astrolabes, quadrants, sextants, sundials and others. But the most interesting is the star binoculars. Once night, he tried the object, he saw many luminous stars in the sky, there was also a very bright moon. He was very happy to be in the laboratory watching stars and moons. But the laboratory is very dangerous for Peter who was still 7 years old. So that his father forbade Peter to go to the Laboratory.

Seeing their children felt lonely and always staying at home. One day when Peter’s birthday, Mr. Baker, Peter's father brought a small goose to accompany Peter who was lonely.

"Peter, I bring something for you ..."

"What’s that father?" he smiled happily.

"I bring a geese as your birthday present"

Peter's smile disappeared, because he thought his father would provide binoculars for him.

"Hey boy, Aren’t you happy?"

"No Dad, I'm happy," he said, and taking the goose.

"My son, listen to me, do you know that these white swans can fly high? You will be amazed when you see the horde flying together during the immigration season"

"Is it true?"

"Yes, it's your job to raise this little goose, and we will see this goose fly high when he grows up"

"Okay Dad"

Since then, Peter has kept this goose. He named his goose Radella. But his desire to see the moon and stars using a telescope was still exists.

One night in winter, when Peter was in front of the fireplace. He was studying with his father's books. Peter was increasingly curious about how the actual moon looks? Is this true that the moon shaped round like a ball and the colour is yellow? What is the actual shape of star? Why are there many stars in the sky while the moon has only one? And there are still many more questions that come to his mind. Suddenly there was a voice calling his name.

“Peter”

“Who is that? Dad, is that you?” Peter looked for where the voice came from.

“Peter, it’s me, I am Radella”

“It's impossible for geese to talk”

“But it is me, Peter. Please believe me!” Radella, the geese said.

“How could it be?” Peter confused.

“I'm a special goose. I have magic power, so I can talk to humans.” Radella said.

“Special goose? And I didn’t believe about magic, there isn’t magic in this world. I just believe about science.”

“Yes, I am. But, you can see it by yourself”

“Then, how can my daddy take you to this home?” asked Peter.

“Your daddy found me who was left by my friend while I was in the lake. I think, he felt symphatetic for me, and remembered about you who often alone in home ” Said Rudella, explain it all.

“Oh God! it can’t believe, I talk with the geese.”

“I can prove about my magic power. I can ”

"I can turn big, and can fly to the sky. I know you are curious about the moon, I can take you there."

Peter rounded his eyes.

"How do you know?"

"Do you believe that I can read someone's mind with my magic power."

"Wow, this is truly amazing."

"Okay, do you want to leave now?"

"Your offer is quite interesting" Actually, Peter was still unsure of what he had heard. But it doesn't 

wrong to try to trust this goose.

Suddenly..

"Peter, father come home" Mr. Voice Baker heard. Peter ran away and hugged his father who had just returned home.

"Father, do you know if Radella can speak?"

"Oh boy, don't joke it's late night."

"But daddy--"

"Come on, sleep" Finally Peter walked to his room followed by the goose Radella. When Peter will close his eyes to sleep. Radella's voice was heard again.

"Peter"

"What?"

"Let's go to the moon"

"Don't joke it's late. What if my father doesn't find me in the room tomorrow morning?"

"Well, the moon is only at night, and don’t worry about your father, we just must have returned tomorrow morning. Do you want to come or not?"

"Okay, let's go"

Instantly, Radella turned into a big goose so Peter could ride it. They came out through the rather large room window of Peter.

Their journey begins.

Radella flew quickly across the night sky. Peter holds on Radella's neck.

"Radella, are we still far from the moon?"

"Soon to arrive"

"Ah, really? I can't wait to see the moon"

"Okay, tight grip."

Peter tightened his grip on Radella, because Radella accelerated his flight.

Shortly thereafter, Peter sees a giant ball.

"Radella, what is that? It's round like a ball"

"Oh do you see it? It's the moon" 

Peter felt very happy that he could finally see the moon with his eyes without the help of his father's star telescope. The longer, they got closer to their destination and finally landed in the moon. Peter did not believe that he was putting his feet on the moon.

"Wow, this is amazing. Only the two of us are here."

"Look! We can see more stars on the moon than on earth."

"I'm very pleased"

"Look at that earth! If you see it looks like a big ball"

However, suddenly a problem came.

"Peter, this is bad"

"What is wrong?"

"I forgot that today there will be a lunar eclipse"

"Then?"

"We must return to earth now. My magic will disappear when an eclipse occurs"

"Will your magic return after the lunar eclipse is finished?"

"Indeed"

"So what's the problem? We can go back when the eclipse is finished"

"Don't you remember that there is no oxygen on the moon? You can die if there is no oxygen."

"Ah yes, I just remembered"

"Quick Peter, we have to leave immediately. The eclipse starts soon"

Peter ran towards Radella. Unfortunately, when Radella started flying the moon also began to darken.

"Oh no, we have to be faster Radella" Radella immediately accelerated her flight.

"Radella, the bull is already closed a quarter"

"How about this?" panic Peter is very confused and scared, but an emerge from his head.

"Radella, will your magic remain if we are not in the dark moon area?"

"It might be possible, but the possibilities are quite a bit."

"Do we need to try?"

"You mean?"

"According to my father's book, when the lunar eclipse there is a part of the moon that is not dark in the sun. Maybe we can get there?"

'' You are right Peter, fine I will change direction. But I don't know if I can reach that area before the eclipse happens. "

Radella tries to fly very fast.

"The moon is getting closed, there are only a few more left."

"Hold Peter, I'll try to fly faster as best I can"

"But it's impossible Radella, the moon will darken in seconds"

"Peter don't close your eyes, we'll be here soon"

"I can't Radella" Radella continues to fly towards the part of the moon that is not covered by eclipses.

"Hopefully we will arrive on time, Peter" Peter's eyes began to close.

"Not!" Peter shouted.

"What's the boy?" asked Mr. Baker who ran away to Peter's room after hearing his son's scream.

"Dad, where am I?"

"Are you in the room, why is that? Are you having a bad dream?"

"Why am I in the room? Wasn't I in the moon with Radella? Was that just a dream?" Peter said to himself. he was still confused whether he had dreamed last night or not.

"Dad, where is the goose Radella?" suddenly the goose appeared from behind the door. Peter breathes a sigh of relief seeing that Radella is fine.

"Maybe last night was just a dream"

"Where are you going, Dad?"

"Oh, I have to finish my research on the lunar eclipse last night"

Peter was suddenly shocked and did not believe.
